iTunes 10 not working with FireFly Media server

Since we started the VortexBox project we have been using the FireFly Media server to serve music to iTunes. iTunes 10 does not work with FireFly so anybody who upgrades to 10 will loose iTunes conductivity with their VortexBox. We are working on a promising replacement that is in BETA now.

If you have iTunes 10 please help test our new DAAP server.

Hi-Fi Choice reviews the VortexBox Appliance

The October addition of the British audiophile magazine Hi-Fi Choice came out this week. They have a review of the VortexBox Appliance. They gave it 5 stars, their highest rating, for easy of use a features. If you don’t have Hi-Fi Choice at your news stand several tech blog sites have republished the article. Transmission now available

The Transmission Bitorrent client can now be installed on your VortexBox appliance.

To install, first of all go to the web interface of your VortexBox appliance, (http://vortexbox), click on the Upgrade Icon, (bottom left hand corner), & the click on the Start Upgrade button. Once the upgrade process has completed & you’ve restarted your VortexBox, go back to the web interface, click on the Upgrade Icon & at the top of the Windows, there will be a Button that will allow you to install Transmission.

If you’re a Windows, Linux or Mac OSX user, you can control Transmission using the Transmission Remote GUI, (see http://code.google.com/p/transmisson-remote-gui/).

VortexBox 1.4 has been released

We are pleased to announce the release of VortexBox 1.4 by VortexBox in the US. Continuing with our goal to make VortexBox the universal server for any media player full DLNA support has been added to VortexBox. DLNA is the future of media sharing and many players such as PS3, Windows 7 Media Player, and Samsung televisions support DLNA. Now you can easily serve your music and video files to all these devices.

We have also added Bliss to the VortexBox web GUI. Bliss can find cover art for even the most obscure albums.

As usual there are also may other fixes and updates requested by the VortexBox community.

You can upgrade to VortexBox 1.4 via the update button in your VortexBox appliance’s web interface or you can download the .iso from here.

To new server that is running on the same sort of motherboard used by our Vortexbox appliances with 2 X 2.5″ hard drives in RAID1. Hopefully it’s a “greener” server than the old one, (Athlon 2000, 2 X IDE hard drives) & is also faster.

Mac OSX 10.6.3 file share problem

Apple has introduced a bug on the new OSX 10.6.3. This will cause permission problems when you copy files to your VortexBox. We have come up with a workaround on the VortexBox end. You will need to upgrade your VortexBox if you have OSX 10.6.3

Step 1 – Use the GUI update menu and update your VortexBox to the latest code.

Step 2 – Go into the network GUI menu and press submit. You do not need to make any changes to this menu just press submit. This will reconfigure your file sharing so it works with OSX 10.6.3
