Blu-ray ripping for back up purposes is now supported by the VortexBox if you’re running VortexBox 1.9, 1.10 or 2.0 & have a suitable drive fitted to your VortexBox.

New case for the standard VortexBox appliance

Since just before Christmas 2011 we have been unable to obtain the case we’ve used for the standard VortexBox appliance since October 2009. The importer has not had stock & has been unable to advise an ETA of when they would become available again.

So we’ve moved on & are using the Aywun A1-8989 case, you can find out more about this case at http://www.aywun.com/ProductDetails.asp?ID=67.

If this case doesn’t suit you, let us know & we’ll see what other suitable alternatives may suit you.

Thailand Flooding forces Hard Drive Price Increase

Since the flooding occurred in Thailand earlier this year, the price of hard drives has effectively doubled as over 25% of the world’s hard drive manufacturing was taken out by the floods. While we are able to keep the pricing of the standard VortexBox the same. we have been forced to increase the price of the hard drive upgrades. The pricing has been amended on the Buy page.

Our apologies for this, but it is beyond our control. We hope that the price of hard drives will go back down when the manufacturing capacity is rebuilt.

VortexBox 2.0 released

With the recent release of Fedora 16 it’s time to release a new version of VortexBox based on it. VortexBox 2.0 is based on Fedora 16 and also includes the new Logitech Media Server 7.7.0. We have added some other fixes and updates as well including new versions of MPD and our built in DLNA server.

The upgrade process can not be done via the web interface, it is a command line only process. The details are available at http://info.vortexbox.org/tiki-index.php?page=Upgrade. Please note this is not guaranteed to work & backup of all the data/music etc on your VortexBox appliance should be done first.

Please note that VortexBox 2.0 does not support RAID1, so if you have a VortexBox RAID1 appliance, at this point in time you cannot upgrade to VortexBox 2.0

VortexBox 1.10 released!

It’s been a while since we released a new version of VortexBox and there are a lot of small fixes and tweaks in this new version. There are the usual updates such as a new Kernel and SqueezeBox server 7.6.1. There are also a lot of small updates such as increased UPnP player support. VortexBox now supports the latest Samsung TVs and the BeoSound 5 from Bang & Olufsen.

We added a lot of user requested features such as a one click restore button in the USB backup manager. We also added faster mp3 mirroring at the request of VortexBox users. This version has been tested with new products from Sonos and Logitech including the new Play:3 to ensure these devices are fully supported.

You can upgrade to 1.10 by clicking on the Upgrade button in your VortexBox’s web interface & if you’d like to download a disk image to make your own CD, its available here.

We’ve been asked a number of times about power protection for our VortexBox appliances, so we’ve managed to source a limited number of power boards with 8 individually switched plugs, 2 of which have wider spacing for plug packs, they include surge protection for phone lines, (protect your ADSL modem) & surge protection for your TV aerial.

These power boards offer 52 Kv amp protection & normally retail for around $140.00. We have them for $55.00 plus delivery.

We’re pleased to announce that there has been specifications upgrades & pricing changes. Of particular note is the upgrade to (faster) DDR3 RAM, the Intel NM10 chipset & the D525 1.8GHz Atom processor, you can check them out at the specifications page here & there have been some price drops in some of the upgrades, see the changes here.
